August is the month to see Riga in a celebratory mood. Big performances share the calendar with outdoor music and the city’s birthday, while museums offer a quieter way to spend the warmest part of an afternoon.

In 2026 Riga turns 825. The cultural programme makes it possible to choose between a concert-led trip, a weekend around the birthday celebrations or a slower stay built around art and neighbourhood discoveries. These eight dates and exhibitions are a starting point for that choice.

🎶 Big evenings and outdoor music

🎧 Calvin Harris at Mežaparks

When: 6 August.
Where: Mežaparks Great Bandstand.

The electronic-music headliner brings a large outdoor show to the wooded Mežaparks setting. This is one of the month’s clearest reasons to plan a trip around a single evening.

Make the distinction between gates and performance time when reading the organiser’s programme. Mežaparks is a separate journey from central Riga, and an unhurried arrival is part of enjoying a large event. Our dedicated Calvin Harris guide provides more context for the visit.

🎤 Marcus & Martinus at Palladium

When: 6 August.
Where: Palladium Rīga.

The Scandinavian pop duo bring The Room tour to a different Riga stage on the same date as the Mežaparks show. It is a useful reminder to choose the artist you most want to hear rather than trying to combine two headline concerts in one night.

For a younger pop audience or friends travelling together, a Palladium evening can become the main focus of a city break, with museums, cafés and sightseeing filling the daytime.

🎸 Tante Gaida & Rīgas Modes: an indie evening

When: 13 August, 19:00.
Where: Ziemeļblāzma Culture Palace park.

A local indie programme gives the birthday month a smaller-scale soundtrack. The park setting is a reason to make an evening of a different neighbourhood, particularly if you already know Riga’s main central sights.

This kind of outing works best with a little breathing room: arrive before the performance, enjoy the surroundings and plan transport back rather than assuming every cultural venue sits beside the Old Town.

🎷 Atvērti džezam: open-air jazz

When: 20 August, 19:00.
Where: Ziemeļblāzma Culture Palace park.

The park’s summer programme continues with an evening devoted to jazz. It is an appealing alternative if you prefer a smaller setting to the month’s headline shows.

Keep your daytime plan simple and let the performance set the rhythm of the evening. Outdoor music and a warm extra layer are a particularly good late-summer pairing.

🎉 Riga’s birthday weekend

✨ Pilsētas frekvence: a birthday opening night

When: 14 August, 21:00–01:00 on 15 August.
Where: Rātslaukums.

Electronic music and light open the birthday weekend in Town Hall Square. The city describes an audiovisual evening that turns the square into a shared urban stage.

This is the late-night option in the selection. Include both dates in your plan: a programme starting on Friday evening continues into Saturday. A dinner beforehand and a short route home make more sense than adding an early start the next morning.

🎂 Riga’s 825th birthday concert

When: 15 August.
Where: 11. novembra krastmala and the city centre.

Music, dance, light and an audiovisual programme form the cultural centrepiece of Riga’s birthday celebrations. Choose the performances and creative activities that interest you, then leave room to enjoy the streets between them.

For visitors, the appeal is the city itself becoming part of the outing. You can combine a daytime walk with the riverfront programme, without needing to turn the whole weekend into a sequence of ticketed attractions.

🎨 Art for a slower afternoon

🖼️ Raimonds Staprāns: The Architecture of Silence

When: Opens 14 August.
Where: Latvian National Museum of Art, Jaņa Rozentāla laukums 1.

This centenary exhibition focuses on the painter’s visual language and opens on the birthday weekend. Give the paintings a slower look, then continue through the nearby parks. The exhibition is scheduled to remain on view until 17 January 2027.

🗿 Last August days for Lidó Rico: The Revelation

When: Until 23 August.
Where: Art Museum RIGA BOURSE, Doma laukums 6.

The contemporary sculpture exhibition reaches the end of its Riga run on 23 August. If your visit falls earlier in the month, it can form a compact art stop in the Old Town, with the museum’s historic rooms providing part of the experience.

🗓️ Pick the weekend that matches your kind of Riga

Choose early August for the two contrasting concert options on the sixth. Choose the middle of the month for the birthday programme and a museum opening. A later stay can be quieter in pace, with outdoor jazz and the final days of the Lidó Rico exhibition.

For events that continue after midnight, reserve the following morning for something flexible. A late breakfast and a short walk often make a better city-break memory than trying to complete every landmark before lunch.

🏡 Make yourself at home in Riga

A private apartment gives your city break a comfortable pause between outings. Explore MIRO Rooms Center, Skolas and French, choose the size and facilities that suit your stay, and keep some time free for the discoveries between planned events.
